Power is a central theme in Kimmo Pyykkö’s art. The Those in Power exhibition expands on the theme of power through the work of numerous artists. In addition to Pyykkö’s works, the exhibition features the kings and queens and the Napoleons and the Kekkonens – and even Finland’s former PM Sanna Marin – by other artists. The exhibition is curated by Soila Kaipiainen from the Kimmo Pyykkö Art Museum.

This exhibition presents the extensive and wide-ranging artistic career of the Tampere artist Tuula Lehtinen from the 1980s to the present decade. It presents paintings, prints, mosaic works, ceramic sculptures and installations. In addition to her earlier oeuvre, there will be new works and reinterpretations of previous works, themes and subjects. The exhibition will present a broad chronological span covering Tuula Lehtinen’s development from a printmaking artist into a painter and a creator of public works.

Lehtinen’s art deals with eternal questions of philosophy and history concerning beauty and its deep significance for humankind in all ages. She approaches the thematics of beauty from the tradition of art, using nostalgic subjects such as of flower still lifes, landscapes, decorative porcelain objects, curtains, lace and pictures of the queens of history. She brings her interpretations to the field of contemporary art in an individual way that challenges the taboos of art. Lehtinen’s art shows that, whatever the age, beauty speaks to and touches people, and that they have an innate need to experience it.

For Lehtinen, the continuation and renewal of the tradition of art and handicrafts is important. She uses a variety of materials in her works, from paper to porcelain. The techniques used by Lehtinen – painting in oils, the various procedures of printmaking, porcelain painting, padding, embroidery, ceramic casting and mosaics – all bring their own dimensions to the content of her works.

Tuula Lehtinen has been actively engaged in and promoted the fine arts in Finland for the past four decades. She has served as a professor of printmaking at the National Academy of Arts in Bergen, Norway, and she has written a number of textbooks on this subject. She has held numerous solo exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Lehtinen has also made several public mosaic works: for example, at sites in her home town like Tampere Swimming Centre (2006–07), the Small Palace in the Finlayson area (2009), the district of Vuores (2011) and the Rantaväylä tunnel (2016). Her most recent public work is a mosaic produced in 2022 for the Serlachius Museums’ Art Sauna in Mänttä-Vilppula. Lehtinen is also known for being the founder of Himmelblau, the most important printmaking studio in Finland and the Frei Zimmer consultancy for the coordination of public art.

Valtion taideteostoimikunta valitsi Tuula Lehtisen Lähdevettä 1 Kansallismuseon uudisosan yleisen taidekilpailun voittajaksi viiden finalistiehdotuksen joukosta. Lehtisen heijastumia kuvaavien keraamisten mosaiikkiteosten taustalla on ajatus vedestä ihmisiä yhdistävänä elementtinä. Teoskokonaisuuden on tarkoitus valmistua Kansallismuseon laajennusosan avautuessa yleisölle keväällä 2027.

Kansallismuseon uudisosan kaksivaiheisen taidekilpailun järjesti Kansallisgallerian yhteydessä toimiva valtion taideteostoimikunta yhdessä Suomen kansallismuseon, Senaatti-kiinteistöjen ja Museoviraston kanssa. Kilpailussa etsittiin ideoita Kansallismuseon uudisosan yhteyteen toteutettavasta teoksesta tai teossarjasta, joka luo uudisosalle identiteettiä ja tukee rakennuskokonaisuuden yhtenäisyyttä.

Kilpailun ensimmäiseen vaiheeseen saapui 187 teosideaa, joista jatkokehitykseen valittiin Atso Airolan ja Leon Hidalgon, Otto Karvosen, Hanna-Kaisa Korolaisen sekä Tuula Lehtisen teosehdotukset. Kilpailun arvostelulautakuntana toimi valtion taideteostoimikunta, jonka mukaan kaikki finalistien jatkokehittämät ehdotukset olivat korkeatasoisia, teknisesti toisistaan poikkeavia, laadukkaita ja toteutuskelpoisia.

Kilpailun voittajaksi valittiin Tuula Lehtisen Lähdevettä 1, johon kuuluu kaksi uudisrakennuksen eri tiloihin sijoittuvaa keramiikkamosaiikkia. Ehdotuksen ansiona pidettiin sitä, miten metallin sävyissä välkehtivät teokset luovat monumentaalisen ja maalauksellisen kokonaisuuden. Pikselimäinen, lähes abstrakti kuvakieli tuo mielleyhtymiä metsäiseen tilaan ja veden äärellä olemiseen. Taiteilijan tavoitteena oli löytää jotain, mikä yhdistää kaikkia ihmisiä ja on samalla osa suomalaista maisemaa ja perinnettä:

”Halusin löytää teokselleni idean, joka olisi ajaton ja riittävän helposti avautuva monille ikäpolville ja monien eri kansallisuuksien edustajille, niin Suomessa asuville kuin muualta tuleville. Ajatus lähteestä ja vedestä tuntui juuri sopivalta kuvaamaan yhteyttä monien kulttuurien perinteeseen ja myös meidän suomalaiseen kokemusmaailmaamme ja luontoomme.”

Yleisö sai äänestää omaa suosikkiaan Kansallismuseon pop up -näyttelytilassa, jossa finalistien ehdotukset olivat esillä syksyn ajan. Eniten yleisön ääniä sai teosehdotus Armas aika, taiteilija Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen. Finalistien kilpailutyöt sekä arvostelupöytäkirja ovat nähtävillä 15.4.2024 saakka kilpailun verkkosivuilla.

Valtion taideteostoimikunta hankkii teoksia Senaatti-kiinteistöjen, valtioneuvoston kanslian ja Suomen Yliopistokiinteistöjen rakennuttamiin kiinteistöihin. VTTK on opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön asettama ja toimii Kansallisgallerian yhteydessä.

The first phase of the art competition for the extension of the National Museum of Finland has been concluded

n the first phase of the general art competition for the extension of the National Museum of Finland, 187 art proposals were received. The Finnish State Art Commission selected four art proposals for further development. The final selection of the realized artworks will be made in the autumn of 2023. The construction of the extension of the National Museum of Finland is set to begin in the autumn and will open to the public in the spring of 2027.

The two-stage art competition for the extension of the National Museum is organized by the Finnish State Art Commission in collaboration with the Finnish National Gallery, Senate Properties, and the Finnish Heritage Agency. The goal of the first phase of the competition was to find ideas for an artwork or a series of artworks to be implemented in connection with the extension of the National Museum.

The selected art proposals for further development are as follows:

1. “Lojan puutarhassa” (In Loja’s Garden) is a large-scale rug design that also refers to the architecture of the historical part of the National Museum, Hvitträsk Garden, and the sculptor and textile artist Loja Saarinen.

2. “Pinnan alla” (Beneath the Surface) is an interactive art proposal that deals with collective memory. The artwork combines different materials and techniques to depict Finnish mythology and the landscape of the soul.

3. “Lähdevettä” (Spring water) consists of handcrafted ceramic mosaics and aims to evoke hope. This delicate and organic art proposal highlights the significance of water and springs for people.

4. “Välähdyksiä” (Flashes) is a light installation that aligns with the architecture and surface materials of the new building. This subtle and changing artwork allows for various moods and imagery in the space.

The competition is conducted anonymously until the end, and the selected artists are announced in alphabetical order for this reason: Atso Airola & Leon Hidalgo, Otto Karvonen, Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen, and Tuula Lehtinen.

The second phase of the competition will take place from May 10 to September 12, 2023, during which the selected artists will further develop their art proposals. In the autumn, the proposals can be viewed at the National Museum and online, and the public can vote for their favorite. Both the public’s favorite and the final selection of the realized artworks made by the prize jury will be announced on October 16.

Embrace -mosaic

Serlachius Museums’ New Art Sauna is a new architectonic perspective into the concept of Finnish sauna, Art Sauna stands on the shore of Serlachius Museum Gösta. The name Art Sauna is appropriate for this architecturally unique sauna building which houses both art and design.

After the summer sauna, people often sit and look at the lake surface. From the embrace of steam, we move into the embrace of nature. In this mosaic the pine trees gilded by the evening sun are reflected on the rippling surface of the water. A source of inspiration has also been Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s small painting “Landscape from Kuhmo” from 1890, which is part of the museum’s collections.

Subflora art work in Stockholm’s Danderys hospital was officially finished in November! It’s located in the corridors of annex, where it runs through six floors. Mosaic work covers 45 square meters in total.
