This exhibition presents the extensive and wide-ranging artistic career of the Tampere artist Tuula Lehtinen from the 1980s to the present decade. It presents paintings, prints, mosaic works, ceramic sculptures and installations. In addition to her earlier oeuvre, there will be new works and reinterpretations of previous works, themes and subjects. The exhibition will present a broad chronological span covering Tuula Lehtinen’s development from a printmaking artist into a painter and a creator of public works. 

Lehtinen’s art deals with eternal questions of philosophy and history concerning beauty and its deep significance for humankind in all ages. She approaches the thematics of beauty from the tradition of art, using nostalgic subjects such as of flower still lifes, landscapes, decorative porcelain objects, curtains, lace and pictures of the queens of history. She brings her interpretations to the field of contemporary art in an individual way that challenges the taboos of art. Lehtinen’s art shows that, whatever the age, beauty speaks to and touches people, and that they have an innate need to experience it.

For Lehtinen, the continuation and renewal of the tradition of art and handicrafts is important. She uses a variety of materials in her works, from paper to porcelain. The techniques used by Lehtinen – painting in oils, the various procedures of printmaking, porcelain painting, padding, embroidery, ceramic casting and mosaics – all bring their own dimensions to the content of her works.

Tuula Lehtinen has been actively engaged in and promoted the fine arts in Finland for the past four decades. She has served as a professor of printmaking at the National Academy of Arts in Bergen, Norway, and she has written a number of textbooks on this subject. She has held numerous solo exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Lehtinen has also made several public mosaic works: for example, at sites in her home town like Tampere Swimming Centre (2006–07), the Small Palace in the Finlayson area (2009), the district of Vuores (2011) and the Rantaväylä tunnel (2016). Her most recent public work is a mosaic produced in 2022 for the Serlachius Museums’ Art Sauna in Mänttä-Vilppula. Lehtinen is also known for being the founder of Himmelblau, the most important printmaking studio in Finland and the Frei Zimmer consultancy for the coordination of public art.

Stillleben, nature morte, hat in der Malerei eine lange und abwechslungsreiche Tradition. Zu einer eigenständigen Bildgattung und zur Blüte etablierte sich dieses Genre in der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts. Allerdings verlor es danach in der Rangordnung der Bildgattungen an Bedeutung und wurde bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts als das minderwertigste Genre, hinter Historienmalerei, Porträt und Landschaft betrachtet. Auf dem Weg in die moderne Malerei wurde das Stillleben danach durch junge Maler*innen wiederentdeckt und auf der Suche nach neuen Ausdrucksformen fungierte es für sie als ein optimales Experimentierfeld.

Die traditionellen Motive des Stilllebens sind leblose, meist dem Alltag entnommene Gegenstände, insbesondere Lebensmittel und Objekte aus der Flora und Fauna. Oft hatten die Darstellungen auch eine verschlüsselte, moralische Botschaft: memento mori – denke daran, dass du sterben wirst. Es überrascht vielleicht, dass das alte Genre Stillleben nach wie vor für viele Künstler*innen ein interessantes und faszinierendes Betätigungsfeld ist. Neben den herkömmlichen Mitteln und Bedeutungen haben sich allerdings die Erscheinungsformen durch neue Medien und Inhalte verändert. So geht es oft nur am Rande um Stillleben im traditionellen Sinne – viel mehr in verschiedenster Weise um aktuelle Themen unserer komplexen Zeit.

Die Ausstellung “nature morte – still alive” geht mit neun künstlerischen
Positionen der Frage nach, mit welchen Intentionen und Techniken sich finnische
Künstler*innen heute mit dem Genre Stillleben auseinandersetzen.

Tuula Lehtinen on monipuolisuudestaan tunnettu kuvataiteilija, jonka uusi näyttely on jatkumoa Galleria Halmetojassa Helsingissä nähtyyn näyttelyyn Behind Curtains. Öljymaalauksista koostuva näyttely kulkee kauneuden ja todellisuuden rajapinnalla. Lehtisen esteettinen leikittely on röyhkeää. Se nauraa modernismin ihanteille ja rakastaa barokin laskoksia, rokokoon kepeyttä ja salonkimaalareiden silkoisia pintoja. Lehtinen on tehnyt myös mosaiikkiteoksen Serlachius-museoiden uuteen taidesaunaan.

Pysyvät posliinikokoelmat kohtaavat uudet tulkinnat kesän 2022 taidenäyttelyssä Heinolan taidemuseossa. Esillä on teoksia kolmelta taiteilijalta, jotka ponnistavat keramiikan vuosisataisista perinteistä.

Tuula Lehtisen grafiikan rinnalle ovat tulleet barokin maalaustaiteesta inspiroituneet maalaukset, suuret mosaiikkityöt ja posliiniveistokset. Hän rakastaa käsin tekemistä ja koristelua, mikä näkyy erityisesti hänen keraamisissa teoksissaan.

The exhibition at Gallery Halmetoja is comprised of oil paintings that reflect on the boundaries of beauty and reality. Lehtinen’s aesthetic playfulness is brash; it laughs at the ideals of Modernism while showing love to the drapery of Baroque, the lightness of Rococo and the smooth surfaces of salon painters. Lehtinen utilizes elements perceived as feminine, such as flowers, lace, textiles and ornaments. She is mysterious and partly surrealistic, but ultimately always stylish in her precision. At their best, her artworks are flirting with banal beauty without ever being banal themselves.

These new paintings lure the viewer to be enthralled over drapery. The references to Baroque painting are evident, and the relishing of drapery at the very least as unbridled. As the folds symbolize the degree of ecstasy, one can interpret Lehtinen’s artworks cheekily, wondering what kind of ecstasy might be revealed from behind the drapes.
